Early Spring Home Exterior Maintenance Tips
Spring is a welcome time in southwestern Ontario. Many homeowners enjoy being active outdoors, working in our gardens, landscaping and yards.
However, early spring is the best time to look for and repair damage that may have occurred during the winter months. Take care of these maintenance to-do’s and enjoy the warm weather months knowing that your home’s exterior is taken care of:
Roof
- Examine the roof and replace missing or worn shingles
- Inspect the seals around rooftop vents and chimneys are in good condition
- Ensure that eavestroughs are clean
Windows and doors
- Repair and replace rotted or damaged caulking or wood around windows and door frames before the heavy spring rains arrive
- Fix holes or tears in window and door screens
Driveway, patio and decks
- Check for signs of heaved concrete, patio blocks or pavers; repair and replace as necessary – they may be a tripping hazard
- Replaced any wood that appears rotted on decks and steps
- Confirm that handrails are in good shape and securely fastened
Foundation
- Check that the downspouts clear and draining leak-free several feet away from your home
- Look for low areas where water may pool near your foundation and backfill these areas
- Inspect basement windows and window wells for signs of water penetration
- Ensure that any crawl space access doors are sealed tightly and are in good shape
