Signs of a Failing Foundation
When a home is constructed, the builders dig a hole in often dense, untouched soil for the foundation. After the foundation is built, the soil which was removed is then backfilled in around the foundation. This loose soil holds more water and this water can seep into your basement.
Over time, this soil expands and contracts, adding pressure to the foundation and increasing the likelihood of cracks. Inadequate drainage and excessive moisture can also contribute to foundation problems.
If your basement is finished or your crawl space difficult to access, you may not be able to see cracks in your home’s foundation. However, aside from visible cracks, there are other signs of a potential foundation problem:
- Sagging or unlevel floors
- Sloped ceilings
- Unlevel windows or door frames
- Sticking doors or windows that are difficult to open
- Gaps between walls and ceilings or walls and floors
- Interior wall cracks
- Cracks in floor tiles
- Decorative mouldings that have shifted out of place
- Tilting chimney
- Water intrusion in the basement or crawlspace (moisture and/or mould)
Issues that are visible in all areas of a home may be the result of a problem foundation. If a foundation problem is left unchecked, often the related problems will increase in number and severity.
