Low Cost Ideas to Help Save Money on Your Home's Energy Bills
In a recent article, we discussed our solution to improve the comfort of your home with our products. We’d like to now offer you some low or no-cost ideas on how to further save on your home’s energy bills.
- Let the sunshine in - Open the drapes on sunny days to help warm your home. Close the drapes after sunset to help insulate the windows from the cold night air.
- Be mindful of your wood burning fireplaces – By design, they can drain the heat from your home. When not in use, be certain the damper is completely closed and consider blocking the front of the fireplace with a fitted piece of insulation.
- Move away from the draft - Move furniture away from exterior walls so your family is relaxing in a cold, drafty area and tempted to turn the heat up.
- Turn heat down by one degree – This can save you money every month. Encourage family members to “get cosy” this winter by wearing extra layers of clothing in the home.
- Be conscious of energy use when cooking - Here are a few money-saving examples:
- Use a microwave to reheat dinners rather than warming them in the oven.
- Cook several meals at once to use energy more efficiently.
- Use an electric kettle to boil water rather than a stovetop kettle.
- Unplug your garage beer fridge – It’s not worth to have it running just for a few cold drinks which can easily iced down in a couple of hours when needed.
- Check your attic access – Ensure that the insulation in the access to your attic is in the proper place to help prevent heat loss.
- Add weather stripping – Exterior doors can be a costly area of heat loss in your home. Replacing or adding weather stripping is a low-cost way to help improve your home’s efficiency.
