Radon - Frequently Asked Questions
How does radon enter a building?
There are many ways radon can enter a structure, including:
- Cracks in foundation walls and/or in-floor slabs
- Construction joints and support posts
- Gaps around service pipes
- Window casements
- Floor drains
- Sump pumps
- Dirt floors
My neighbour had their home tested, and they were fine, do I still need to do a test?
Every home is constructed differently, and radon levels can vary considerably even within a neighbourhood. It is essential that every home in Ontario is tested.
What if my home has a high level of radon?
If it is determined after testing that your home has an unacceptable level of radon, a “radon mitigation system” can easily and affordably be installed, which removes the deadly gas from your home.
What about my workplace? What about my kids’ school?
Radon can be found in any building, and testing is the only method to determine if radon is present.
If radon is such a concern, why isn’t testing mandatory?
Since 2014, the government of Ontario has been creating awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of radon and the importance of testing.
There are some areas in Ontario where radon mitigation is required in all new construction, and this is being phased in for all new construction starting in 2019.
